    Course Summary

    Abertay University offers Scotland’s only MSci program in Biomedical Science which is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science. It is a brilliant option for any student with hopes for a career in any of the bioscience sector industries, or with an interest in a biomedical science research career pathway. On completion of the 5 year program, you’ll have all of the prerequisites to apply for Registered Scientist stats from the Science Council. The final year of study is eligible for SAAS funding as an ‘integrated undergraduate Master of Science programme’.

    The degree program is essentially a combination of Abertay University’s celebrated BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science combines with a built-in Master’s program. This not only assures you of acceptance into the master’s program when the time comes (upon successful completion of the undergraduate content), it means you’ll be able to specialise your learning and career plans towards a specific specialty from day one.

    Course Outline

    This degree program is typically delivered over 5 years at full time.

    Year 1 Modules Include:

    • Biology 1: Biology Principles and Practice
    • Human Physiology

    Year 2 Modules Include:

    • Molecular Biology and Genetics

    Year 3 Modules Include:

    • Clinical Biochemistry and Cellular Pathology
    • Clinical 2 : Haematology & Transfusion Science

    Year 4 Modules Include:

    • Advanced Medical Genetics
    • Honours Project

    These first 4 years essentially comprise the school’s BSc in Biomedical Science. It may be possible under some circumstances to exit with a BSc upon successful completion of all year 1 through 4 content.

    • Contemporary Topics
    • Master of Science Placement Based Learning
    • MSci Project
    • Science Future and Society

    Year 5 essentially represents the Master’s level content of this combined course. As such, you should expect to study at a more independent, MSc level throughout year 5.

    Learning And Teaching

    This is a very practical degree program. You’ll use learning methods such as individual study time, large lecture classes and smaller, more interactive seminars, tutorials and lab sessions to master the course content. Modules will address Biotechnology, Physiology, Bioinformatics, Genetics, Clinical Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Cellular Biology and more. Upo graduation, your final GPA will be weighted 50% towards years 1-4 (undergraduate content) and 50% on year 5 (postgraduate content).

    Career Possibilities

    As an Institute of Biomedical Science certified Master of Biomedical Science, you’ll have demonstrated scientific, practical and research skills in a highly exacting field. Many graduates go on to become forensic scientists, either working for the public sector in civil service or privately. Many become Crime Scene Investigators or Police Officers. Others focus on a career in research or academia, sometimes pursuing PhD degrees. You’ll have many different options.

    Entry & Credit

    Successful completion will result in a 5 year combined BSc/MSc degree.

    Applicants must first be accepted into the BSc program, and achieve a minimum GPA of 2.5 in that program to advance to the MSc level. The full list of accepted qualifications can be found here.

    All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test. An excellent IELTS score would qualify, for example.
