    Course Summary

Abertay University offers a combined, 5 year Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) and Master of Engineering (MEng) program. Abertay’s course is among the best in the nation, ranked only 8th UK-wide by the Guardian’s University Guide for 2019. This is because beyond the lab and the classroom, you’ll learn real world skills direct from industry leaders.

The degree program is fully accredited, and contains everything you’ll need to achieve the status of Chartered Civil Engineer. You’ll learn how engineers contribute to the societies, communities and individuals with which they work, and see how buildings, the environment and civil infrastructure all interact to form a complex, dynamic working whole. In addition to making you familiar with a wide range of civil engineering applications and contexts, it allows you to work directly with big names in the construction and engineering industries, such as BEAR Scotland, BAM, Sweco, Balfour Beatty and Transport Scotland.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Learning And Teaching

This is a very practical degree program. You’ll use learning methods such as individual study time, large lecture classes and smaller, more interactive seminars, tutorials and lab sessions to discover how to take on important industry tasks. These might include working with nature to deliver better, more sustainable engineering works, meeting low energy and ecological sustainability targets, developing new ways to reclaim used construction materials, or planning and building more effective wind turbines.

    Career Possibilities

You will have many career options before you by the time you graduate with your combined MEng/BEng. Most of the program’s students undergo summer work placements or internships, and every student will spend a semester working in an industrial context. Some 25% of students are offered long term employment by their former placement host, though this is not guaranteed. Others go on to become Transportation Organisers, Project Managers or Consulting Engineers.

    Entry & Credit

Successful completion will result in a 5 year combined MEng/BEng degree.

Applicants must typically have earned 4 Scottish Highers passes at B or better, or the international equivalent. The full list of accepted qualifications can be found here.

All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test. An excellent IELTS score would qualify, for example.
