    Course Summary

Art University Bournemouth’s MArch (Master of Architecture) program is a professional qualification, fully recognised by both the RIBA and the ARB. It will help you explore new avenues within architectural practice, most especially the concept of ‘Architectural Intervention’.

This course is effectively ‘Part 2’ in the three step process to becoming a professional architect. In it you’ll explore the role of drawings, texts and models in modern architecture. You’ll develop projects which have strong social, cultural and environmental narratives. You’ll work in an open, supportive and critical studio atmosphere which supports innovation, exploration and risk-taking. You’ll also learn how to collaborate on the professional and academic levels, formally and informally, and with a wide range of interdisciplinary input.

The course benefits from close links with RIBA Dorset and architectural practices all over the country. You’ll experience guest lectures form professional practitioners, the ARB and RIBA to keep you on top of developments within the field.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

You’ll begin your study of architecture at the Master’s Degree level by learning about the human body and its use of space. Once you understand the function of interiors on the human level, you’ll begin to project that into both urban spaces and landscapes. At the end of this year you’ll also take a module which focuses on the research methods you’ll need to prepare and present your thesis.

    Modules:

    • Body: Architectural Interventions
    • Landscape: Making in Context
    • Research: Experimental Fabrications
    • Design Thesis 1: Ecological & Professional Strategies
    • Design Thesis 2: Design Detail & Reflection

This program is only considered complete once you present your thesis. This must include a detailed investigation of the ecological context – the land and climate, the materials it would use and the people it could affect. It must also consider the design and legislative aspects of the project. Lastly, you’ll need to consider the creative path the project has taken, and how you personally have developed throughout the process.

    Learning And Teaching

AUB’s MArch degree program will include several different teaching methods. These include practical workshops, research and research methods, actual studio practice, seminars, presentations, critiques and lectures. In addition, you’ll experience educational visits and guest lectures, and do a great deal of independent study. You will also take a module on management, practice and law which will put it all in context. Lastly, you’ll be able to benefit from work experience as you deliver projects in cooperation with industry and architecture professionals.

    Career Possibilities

This degree is a large part of the three-part process of becoming a professional architect. You may only use the title of Architect once you have completed the entire process.

Part One includes an undergraduate degree and a year in practice. This degree counts for the educational component of Part 2. Part 3 requires a further two years in practice, which may be achieved alongside further study. You many then register with AIB and/or RIBA.

    Entry & Credit

Successful completion will result in an MA degree.

Applicants must have successfully completed ‘Part One of the ARB qualification process. Details on that process can be found at the QAA Benchmark Statement, the ARB Website or the RIBA website.

All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test.
