    Course Summary

    Bangor University’s MSc program in Clinical Sciences can also be taken as a PG Diploma or a PG Certificate, depending on your needs and the amount of time you can commit.

    This program is intended to follow on from nearly any undergraduate degree in a science, giving graduates a more intimate understanding of the clinical sciences in general. You’ll study the cellular, musculo-skeletal and cardiovascular systems in their healthy and diseased states, from the anatomical, biochemical and physiological perspectives. You’ll look at health, disease and illness form a psychological perspective as well, which is a different matter entirely.

    If you do take this program as an MSc, your studies will culminate in proposing, undertaking and presenting your own piece of in-depth clinical research. This dissertation will be on a subject of your own choosing, and should take into account your own academic interests as well as your intended career path.

    Course Outline

    This degree program is delivered over a single year for most students. There are six core modules as well as a dissertation module.

    Core Modules:

    • Therapeutics

    This is the essence of clinical technique. It is the branch of medicine most closely associated with the action of remedial agents.

    • Applied Anatomy and Histopathology

    This module explores Histopathology – the changes that disease causes in different body tissues. It also concerns applied anatomy – understanding how the body’s different structures work together.

    • Clinical Physiology

    This module looks the understanding if the structures of the body in a clinical context – what complaints patients make, and how they can best be addressed.

    • Research Skills

    This module explores the qualitative and quantitative methods you’ll use to conduct your dissertation research.

    • Metrology and Health

    This module looks at the science of measurement itself. In the health and clinical context, it looks at exactly what different tests are measuring.

    • Molecular Pathology

    This module looks at the emerging discipline of molecular pathology – the study or diagnosis of an illness based on the molecular changes it makes to the body.

    Learning And Teaching

    Bangor University’s teaching methods vary from module to module, and from program to program. In this case, you will spend a great deal of time in small tutorial or seminar sessions, and even more time in the laboratory or in practical skills workshops. This is an intensive, in-depth degree program even when taken at the PGDip or PGCert level, and you will also be expected to conduct a great deal of self-directed study and research.

    Entry & Credit

    Successful completion will result in a 1 year MSc degree.

    Applicants must typically have achieved a 2:1 undergraduate honours degree or 2+ years of professional experience in a relevant field. The full list of accepted qualifications can be found here.

    Most classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test. An IELTS score of 6.0 overall and no less than 5.5 in any one section would qualify, for example.
