    Course Summary

Brunel’s MEng program in Engineering with Pilot Studies is a great way to study to become a commercial or private pilot. You’ll also gain the kind of engineering knowledge that could take your career in a number of exciting new directions.

You’ll study both the finer points of aerospace engineering and the academic and practical skills you’ll need to qualify for your PPL (Private Pilot’s License). This is a necessary first step to becoming a commercial or military pilot.

All of Brunel’s Aviation Studies degree programs are accredited both by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Royal Aeronautical Society. The combination gives you a great many options when it comes to finding your first critical roles in the industry.

Brunel University London’s proximity to Heathrow Airport makes visits to working aerospace engineering firms and your year in work placement very convenient. It is also a great way to begin making industry contacts.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Learning And Teaching

Brunel’s Aerospace Engineering modules will be taught using Lectures, Laboratory Sessions, Design Studios and One on One sessions with your personal tutor. Lecture classes provide an overview of the concept, backed up by independent study. Lab sessions are 2-3 hour practical sessions which will reinforce observation and analysis skills. Studio sessions allow group project work with the assistance of specialists and members of staff. Finally, you will have one to one sessions with a personal tutor who will provide both academic and pastoral help and support throughout your studies.

    Career Possibilities

This degree program is highly respected by both the aerospace industry and organisations which hire commercial pilots. Recent alumni have gone on to work for organisations like Caterpillar, Qinetiq Group, the Ministry of Defence and the Royal Air Force. The so called ‘thick sandwich’ 5 year degree structure is known to produce highly qualified and capable graduates, and it is common for students to receive several employment offers even before they have graduated.

    Entry & Credit

Successful completion will result in an MEng degree and very likely a Private Pilot’s License.

Applicants must typically have achieved 3 A Levels at AAA or higher. These should include Maths and Physics, but not General Studies. Other equivalent qualifications may also be accepted.

All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test such as the IELTS.
