    Course Summary

A career as a dental hygienist is an excellent choice, as there is high demand for skilled graduates throughout Canada, the US and Europe. Camosun College’s Diploma in Dental Hygiene is a good move for anyone who wishes to prepare themselves for a career in this lucrative field, or who intends to transfer to a 4 year or professional program in Dentistry or a related field.

This program does not include an internship or co-operative element. Instead, it is a 3 year program which includes many clinical and community-facing elements in the second and third years. You’ll learn both in the classroom and in a live, working clinic and provide preventative, therapeutic and educational dental care services directly to patients, under expert supervision. Later you’ll join working dentists in collaborative practice.

There may even be opportunities to travel, delivering care and studying in various locations throughout British Columbia and worldwide.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

The Dental Hygiene program is popular not just with aspiring dental hygienists but also those intending to transfer into 4 year or professional programs. The opportunity to gain real world work experience will not only make you immediately employable, it will give you an edge in a higher degree program.
