    Course Summary

Environmental Technologists find new ways to explore, protect and even rehabilitate the environment in which we all live. The focus of the discipline is sustainability. Camosun College’s Diploma in Environmental Technology is of interest to anyone who wants to be a part of the solution to Earth’s environmental problems, working in a regulatory role or within agricultural, oil and gas or other industries.

You’ll have the opportunity to take on a summer co-op work experience at the end of year 2, which will not only give you real world working experience but also help you develop your professional network.

This program’s third year has two different options. Some students will choose to take an extra academic term, and further their studies in calculus, biodiversity and chemistry. The academic term will also include a capstone research project in sustainability. Alternatively, you can take a term in co-operative education.

There will even be opportunities to travel.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

Camosun’s educational focus has always been intensely practical, largely due to its shared history as a vocational school. Class sizes are small – typically no more than 40 students – and there are a wide range of practicum, internship and co-operative education options to make sure that you can graduate with more than a diploma, but also real world skills in your field or industry of choice. In this case, you’ll also spend a great deal of time in the field.

    Career Possibilities

Many of the students who graduate from Camosun College’s various Diploma programs transfer into baccalaureate level degree programs at fine universities all over Canada and the world. The Environmental Technology program is popular not just with aspiring regulators but also those who want to work within polluting industries to make them cleaner and more sustainable. The opportunity to gain real world work experience will make you immediately employable, either way.
