    Course Summary

Visual Artists work in many different media, including film and video, printmaking, painting, drawing, photography, animation, performance art, sculpture, ceramics, and graphic design. Camosun College’s Diploma in Visual Arts is a great choice for anyone hoping to build a personal practice in any of these or a hundred other media or artistic styles.

As you learn, you’ll also be building your personal portfolio which you’ll need to pursue a career or entry into higher level degree programs.

This is an intensive 2 year program where you will learn both in the classroom and in the college’s top of the line, filly equipped artistic studio spaces. It is also highly interdisciplinary, as you’ll learn ‘a little bit of everything’ relating to the visual arts. This will give you a wide range of technical skills, many of which you can integrate into your own practice in new and unexpected ways. After all, innovations in technique lead to innovations in style!

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Learning And Teaching

Camosun’s educational focus has always been intensely practical, largely due to its shared history as a vocational school. Class sizes are small – typically no more than 40 students – and there are a wide range of practicum, internship and co-operative education options to make sure that you can graduate with more than a diploma, but also real world skills in your field or industry of choice. In this case, you’ll also spend a great deal of adding to your portfolio.

If you opt to work in the visual arts straight away, many careers are open to you.
