    Course Summary

Carleton University’s MAcc program is delivered by its famed Sprott School of Business, and is one of the best respected in the province. It is an excellent choice if you have a bachelor’s level degree in accounting or business, and wish to begin your career at a high level or in a responsible position.

You will learn everything you need to become a CPA, but this program goes far beyond the CPA requirements by giving you a firm grounding in the specialty fields of Performance Management, Financial Accounting, Tax Accounting and Assurance.

You can further specialise your degree by taking optional modules, and co-operative opportunities are available within Canada or greater North America as well. These will be equally useful whether you intend to pursue an academic career at the Research Degree level, whether you’d prefer to pursue professional certification, or whether you prefer to transition directly into the job market.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

This program is typically delivered over 1-2 years at full time. Note, though, that it is possible to take this program at part time with the exception of the Internship requirement. If you are not exempt from the Internship requirement, you will have to register as a full time student for the duration of your internship.

    Master’s Level Accounting Modules Include:

    • Advanced Assurance
    • Advanced Concepts I
    • Advanced Concepts II
    • Advanced Finance
    • Advanced Integration I
    • Advanced Integration II
    • Advanced Taxation
    • Advanced Taxation
    • Data Analytics for Professional Accountants
    • Performance Management
    • Professional Accounting Cases I
    • Professional Accounting Cases II
    • Strategy for Professional Accountants

You’ll have the opportunity to pursue an Internship as well. This represents a chance to apply what you’ve learned in a practical setting, and to earn real world experience in a responsible Accounting position. In addition, your internship experience can typically be applied towards the ‘Practical Work Experience Requirement’ of CPA Ontario’s professional certification.

    Learning And Teaching

Carleton University’s degree programs are delivered using fairly standard learning and teaching methods, though by way of superior personnel. These will typically include large scale lectures, smaller and more interactive seminars and skills tutorials, as well as a mandatory internship experience. These teaching methods have been selected to help students gain a deep understanding of the field and its place in society, as well as to engage the minds of the students.

    Career Possibilities

Depending on how you specialise your degree, you could qualify for many different careers. Many students go directly into the workforce or seek out professional certification with their MAcc degree.

The Sprott School of Business provides many career-oriented services for its students. These include maintaining separate job and internship opportunity postings, providing one on one employment and career advice sessions, putting on employer/student networking events, offering mock interviews and more.

    Entry & Credit

Successful completion will result in a MAcc degree.

To apply, you’ll need to have completed an Honours Bachelor’s level degree which includes the appropriate subjects to make up basic CPA competency, or the international equivalent.

All classes are taught in English unless otherwise specified, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test.
