    Course Summary

Carleton University’s BCS degree (Bachelor of Computer Science) is an exciting opportunity to become a part of one of the world’s fastest growing specialties. It will give you the opportunity to learn a wide range of ‘core’ CS skills, from coding and programing to web development. You’ll also pick up truly advanced techniques and applications like business analytics and software development.

In addition to your formal studies, you’ll have the opportunity to explore a range of study abroad and co-operative or experiential education opportunities.

    • Study abroad is a very popular choice, as it will better prepare you for the realities of the modern, global business environment – even better if you combine it with a concentration in International Business.
    • Co-op opportunities will let you gain real world experience in your chosen specialty or industry, and help you begin networking with those already working in your field. The fact that you will also earn a pay check as you learn is also well worth mentioning.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Learning And Teaching

Carleton University’s degree programs are delivered using fairly standard learning and teaching methods, though by way of superior personnel. These will typically include large scale lectures, smaller and more interactive seminars and skills tutorials, as well as laboratory, internship and co-op experience. These teaching methods have been selected to help students gain a deep understanding of the field and its place in society, as well as to engage the minds of the students.

    Career Possibilities

Depending on how you specialise your degree, you could qualify for many different careers. Of course, you’ll have the option of continuing your schooling at the MSc r even PhD level, but many go directly into the workforce with their BCS degree.

Those students wishing to go directly into work often go into technically-oriented fields such as Biotechnology, Artificial Intelligence, Games Development, Commercial and Business Computing, Software Security, Systems Security, Web Development, Web Services, Software Design and Software Development.

    Entry & Credit

Successful completion will result in a BCS degree.

To apply, you’ll need to have completed high school or the equivalent secondary education. The school has different (but equivalent) admissions standards for Canadian High School graduates, American High School graduates, Home Schooled applicants and other international students.

All classes are taught in English unless otherwise specified, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test.
