    Course Summary

The Master of Computer Science (MCS) degree offered by Carleton University represents a chance to qualify for a high ranking position in a rapidly growing field right out of school. Employers in many industries all over Canada and the world demand highly skilled CS graduates in high numbers every year, and this degree gives you exactly the skills they need.

In addition to your formal studies, you’ll have the opportunity to explore a range of study abroad and co-operative or experiential education opportunities. Co-op experience is highly sought-after by employers, as it lets them know that you have the ability to work at a high level in your chosen field. It will give you real world experience in a specific industry, and help you begin networking with those already working in your field. The fact that you will also earn a pay check as you learn is also well worth mentioning.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Learning And Teaching

Carleton University’s degree programs are delivered using fairly standard learning and teaching methods, though by way of superior personnel. These will typically include large scale lectures, smaller and more interactive seminars and skills tutorials, as well as laboratory, internship and co-op experience. These teaching methods have been selected to help students gain a deep understanding of the field and its place in society, as well as to engage the minds of the students.

    Career Possibilities

Depending on how you specialise your degree, you could qualify for many different careers. Of course you’ll have the option of continuing your schooling at the PhD level, but many students go directly into the workforce with their MCS degree.

Many of Carleton University’s MCS graduates have founded careers in the so called ‘technology cluster’ of the Ottawa – Gatineau area. Employers in this area include not only Government Departments, but also technology companies like Shopify, Cognos, Thales, Mitel, IBM and Alcatel.

    Entry & Credit

Successful completion will result in a MCS degree.

To apply, you’ll need to have completed an Honours Bachelor’s level degree in Computer Science, or the international equivalent. A qualifying year program may be available to fill any degree deficiencies you may have.

All classes are taught in English unless otherwise specified, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test.
