    Course Summary

A BCom degree in Management from Carleton University’s Sprott School of Business is a fine way to begin your business career. It uses both formal education and experiential learning to ensure that its graduates understand not just the theory behind economic and leadership aspects of management, but also have practical experience working within their chosen field.

In addition to your formal studies, you’ll have the opportunity to explore a range of study abroad and co-operative or experiential education opportunities.

    • Study abroad is a very popular choice, as it will better prepare you for the realities of the modern, global business environment – even better if you combine it with a concentration in International Business.
    • Co-op opportunities will let you gain real world experience in your chosen specialty or industry, and help you begin networking with those already working in your field. The fact that you will also earn a pay check as you learn is also well worth mentioning.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

This program is typically delivered over 4 years at full time.

Carleton University’s BCom program offers many different concentrations which you may select to specialise your BCom degree. These include:

    • Accounting – a solid understanding of the ways money and resources are tracked as they flow through various organisations
    • Entrepreneurship – creating and running a start-up, SME or social enterprise and managing a small team of partners or employees
    • Finance – gaining a deeper understanding of both national and international investment markets, and what it takes to invest profitably
    • Information systems – learning about the IT systems and apps which make modern business possible
    • International business – gaining keen insight of not just global markets but also the regulatory frameworks which give them form.
    • Management – both general management principles and a focus on practical, real world leadership skills
    • Marketing – learning new ways to reach the people who buy an organisation’s goods and services, and ways to communicate your message to them effectively
    • Supply Chain Management – learning all about the journey raw materials and components make before they contribute to your company’s goods and services

    Learning And Teaching

Carleton University’s degree programs are delivered using fairly standard learning and teaching methods, though by way of superior personnel. These will typically include large scale lectures, smaller and more interactive seminars and skills tutorials, as well as study abroad and co-op options. These teaching methods have been selected to help students gain a deep understanding of the field and its place in society, as well as to engage the minds of the students.

    Career Possibilities

Depending on how you specialise your degree, you could qualify for many different careers. Of course, you’ll have the option of continuing your schooling at the Master’s or MBA level, but many go directly into the workforce with their BCom degree.

Those students wishing to go directly into work often make thriving careers for themselves in Training and Development, Strategic Human Resources, Performance Management, Management Consulting, Labour Relations or General Management.

    Entry & Credit

Successful completion will result in a BCom degree.

To apply, you’ll need to have completed high school or the equivalent secondary education. The school has different (but equivalent) admissions standards for Canadian High School graduates, American High School graduates, Home Schooled applicants and other international students.

All classes are taught in English unless otherwise specified, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test.
