    Course Summary

An MEng in Advanced Mechanical Engineering from City University London will see you adding to your existing engineering expertise with the kind of advanced practical skills and in-depth theoretical understanding that you’ll need to take on more challenging or leadership-based roles in any mechanical engineering field.

This program is designed for undergraduates with good engineering degrees or for practicing engineers with professional qualifications. It will convey a solid grasp on the science behind thermofluids, structural analysis, fluid dynamics, and the conversion and recovery of heat in mechanical systems. You’ll gain practical skills using CAD and mathematical modelling systems as well as familiarity with the demands of gas turbines and renewable power generation systems.

The modules are all research-led, many presented by leading experts in their specialist fields. They will ensure that you come to understand the sciences that underlie these technologies as well as a practical understanding of how to overcome engineering problems.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

This is a 1 year program for most students, but can be taken over 2 years at part time.

You will take a total of eight taught modules, in addition to your Individual Mechanical Engineering Project and your Dissertation.

    Core Modules:

    • Advanced Structural Mechanics
    • Advanced Heat Transfer
    • IC Engine and Vehicle Propulsion
    • Advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics
    • Gas Turbine Engineering
    • Professional Industrial Management Studies

Elective Modules Choose any 2 from:

    • Combustion Fundamentals and Applications
    • Finite Element Methods
    • Mathematical Modelling in CAD
    • Power Electronics
    • Renewable Energy Fundamentals & Sustainable Energy Technologies

    Dissertation:

Your dissertation is worth 60 credits, a full 1/3 of your marks for the program. This can be research-inspired or based on real world industry issues, depending on your career goals. Those intending on an academic career should focus on the research pathway.

If you do not complete or do not attempt the dissertation, you will still qualify for a Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Mechanical Engineering.

    Learning And Teaching

As in most of City, London University’s Engineering degree programs, your learning time will be sent in large lectures, smaller, more interactive tutorials, intensive technical classes and experimental or computational study. You’ll develop critical thinking skills and learn to work both individually and a team. Your degree progress will be assessed based on your practice competencies, your written work, your end of term examinations and of course on your dissertation.

    Career Possibilities

Mechanical engineers educated to a master’s degree level are in high demand in the UK and abroad. That means you should have little trouble finding challenging, rewarding employment opportunities in a wide range of industries and fields. Alternatively, you can pursue PhD or research-based degrees to found an academic career. Recent graduates have gone to work for Shell, Rolls Royce, Lotus, Jaguar, Howden, Holroyd, Heliex, Ford, Delphi, Sortex and BP.

    Entry & Credit

Successful completion will result in a 1 year MSc degree.

Applicants must typically have achieved a 2:1 honours bachelor’s degree or better, or the international equivalent. Beyond that, a wide range of qualifications are accepted.

All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test. An IELTS score of 6.5 overall and no section scoring lover than 6.0 would qualify, for example.
