    Course Summary

    De Montfort University’s MSc in Accounting and Finance can be a great way for Bachelor’s level graduates to begin a career in finance or the profession of accounting. It can also be a way for practicing financial experts, business consultants, managers, auditors or accountants to gain the synergistic finance and accounting skills they need to take their careers to the next level.

    You’ll learn both theoretical and practical skills. You’ll gain critical thinking and analysis skills and be able to apply them to many business, accounting and finance issues. You’ll study the scope of finance and accounting generally, specific issued that define contemporary International Finance Reporting and the applications of Management Accounting. You’ll also study Applied Trading and Portfolio Management.

    You’ll also learn to conduct research in a finance and accounting context. This will lead you to conducting your final project and writing the related dissertation in your final semester.

    Course Outline

    This degree program is typically delivered over a single year, but can stretch to as many as 3 years if taken at part time around existing commitments or your current career.

    You’ll learn how international financial reporting is accomplished, and the issues affecting it. You’ll learn to apply Management Accounting principles within a theoretical framework. You’ll learn how capital is raised and then used to create and structure business organisations. You’ll study academic and business-oriented research techniques with an eye towards your Dissertation. You’ll also explore tax policy, social responsibility and ways to excel within your chosen profession.

    Learning & Teaching

    If taking the course at full time, you should expect to spend roughly 38 hours per week on your studies. Roughly 14 of these hours will be spent in ‘contact time’ each week for the first 2 semesters, and the remainder of your time will be spent in directed individual and group study. Each module lecturer will also be available for direct consultation for at least 2 hours each week. A Personal Tutor will be made available to you as well.

    Career Possibilities

    You will have many career options after you graduate with your MSc in Accounting and Finance. Depending on your undergraduate qualifications and current career goals, you could pursue the profession of accounting, go into international finance, investment or investment banking or even a career in management in any of a hundred different industries. Other students will be more interested in pursuing their academic careers, and move on to a PhD or Research Degree program.

    Entry Credit

    Successful completion will result in a 1 year MSc degree.

    Applicants must typically have earned a 2:2 Honours degree in a relevant subject but other qualifications are also accepted. The full list of UK qualifications can be found here.

    All classes are taught in English and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test. An IELTS score of 6.0 overall with no sections scoring less than 5.5 would qualify, for example.
