Course Summary
Edge Hill University’s Law degree program gives you the general background and understanding of UK law required for any student who wishes to undertake a training contract (the next step to becoming a barrister or solicitor in the UK). However, it also gives you the opportunity to specialise your legal education in accordance with your own interests and career goals. You might gain a specialty in Family Law, International Property Law, Tax law, or any of a long list of 3rd year options.
You may be able to spend your third year in a professional placement or studying abroad under the ERASMUS scheme, making this a 4 year degree. Either would be an incredible opportunity to expand your horizons, and gain either an international perspective on your legal specialty or to gain real world legal skills right here in the UK. You can also gain experience actually practicing law (under close supervision) at the university’s Pro Bono Law Clinic.
If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills.
