    Course Summary

Edge Hill University’s Psychology BSc is designed to teach you the core concepts of psychology – the scientific study of the mind generally and human behaviour in particular. You’ll study learning, socialisation and the development of language, as well as how to counsel patients and treat various mental illnesses.

You may be able to spend your third year in a working placement or studying abroad under the ERASMUS scheme, making this a 4 year degree. Either would be an incredible opportunity to expand your horizons, and gain either an international perspective on your chosen career or to gain real world working skills in your chosen career pathway.

Better still, this degree program is fully accredited by the BPS – the British Psychological Society. Successful completion with lower second class honours or better gives you eligibility for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership, putting you well on your way to coveted Chartered Psychologist status.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Learning & Teaching

Edge Hill’s Psychology BSc program involves a great deal of independent study, lecture classes, and smaller scale tutorials or seminar sessions. It also has a strong practical component, though, and you’ll spend a great deal of time developing the kind of experimental design and laboratory skills which you’ll need in nearly any psychologically oriented career. You’ll complete a study of your own and write a dissertation based on your research as well.

    Career Possibilities

The GBC status which comes with satisfactory completion of this course is the first step towards practicing as a Chartered Psychologist, but that is far from your only career option. Many graduates go into training programs for educational psychology, work psychology, clinical psychology or health psychology, or into a research specialty. Master’s and eventual PhD status are also options if you elect to proceed to higher level degree programs.

    Entry Credit

Successful completion will result in a 3 year BSc degree.

Applicants must typically have achieved 120 UCAS tariff points, or the international equivalent. Beyond that, a wide range of qualifications are accepted.

All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test. An IELTS score of 6.0 overall and no less than 5.5 in any subsection would qualify, for example.
