    Course Summary

Edge Hill University’s Surgery MCh degree program is intended to give students who have already earned their qualifying medical degree and who are either registered with the GMC or who have been granted an International training Fellowship. You should also be able to demonstrate some experience with performing surgery and a reasonable amount of clinical expertise.

It is an in-depth post-graduate program which will enable you to practice on a much more specialised level within your surgical niche. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of medical research methods, and of the evidence-based approach to medicine generally. It also includes clinical modules and a range of practical workshops which will give you enhanced surgical skills.

You’ll be able to select a specific pathway in accordance with your specialty. Many of these pathways are accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons, and Edge Hill’s Surgical Training Centre is fully accredited by that organisation.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

This program is divided into separate pathways. One option is to remain with the non-specialised MCh Surgery pathway. The specialist options are:

    • MCh Cardiothoracic Surgery
    • MCh Colorectal Surgery
    • MCh Emergency and Trauma
    • MCh Minimal Access Surgery
    • MCh Obstetrics and Gynaecology
      • Fertility

      • Urogynaecology
    • MCh Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Breast Surgery
    • MCh Ophthalmology
      • Cataract and Refractive Surgery
      • Medical Retina
    • MCh Orthopaedics
      • Foot and Ankle
      • Hand and Wrist Surgery
      • Hip and Knee
      • Spine
      • Upper Limb Surgery

    • MCh Rhinology
    • MCh Rhinology and Facial Plastic Surgery
    • MSc Surgical Gastroenterology
    • MCh Surgical Oncology

Within each pathway, you’ll study aspects of evidence-based surgery within that specialised field. This will include both quantitative and qualitative research methods, governance and ethics of research, the analysis of quantitative data, critiquing of research, the writing of research proposals, and an investigative inquiry project.

    Learning & Teaching

This program includes 2 full years of study, though you may extend your dissertation into a third year. In that time you’ll attend lectures, seminars and practical skills sessions. You’ll have extensive clinical sessions, and will have access to the university’s Virtual Learning Environment. You will also complete a log of all of your practice-based learning.  Assessment will be based on your vocational ability, critical thinking and intellectual development.

    Career Possibilities

Students of this degree program will already have established themselves as medical professionals and surgeons. This represents an opportunity to further refine their skills and to improve their prospects for career advancement within their narrow (and competitive) fields. This qualification will give you many opportunities to demonstrate your professional skills, and will assist you in rising through the ranks as a clinician or as an academic.

    Entry Credit

Successful completion will result in a 2 year MCh degree.

Applicants must typically have achieved a qualifying medical degree, or the international equivalent, in addition to clinical and surgical experience. Beyond that, a wide range of qualifications are accepted.

All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test.
