    Course Summary

The Master of Digital Media (MDM) degree offered by the Emily Carr University of Art and Design will help you explore your abilities as an artist, as a designer and as a professional.

You’ll learn as much in studios and research labs as you will in class, giving you the opportunity to expand as a designer, as an artist and as professional in a range of different industries. You’ll also have many professional and co-operative education opportunities, being able to present your work in symposia, publicly exhibit what you have created, and engage in teaching assistantships, research assistantships and internships of many kinds.

This program is designed to be highly interactive, with a very high staff to student ratio. As a result, only very limited numbers of students are admitted to the program each year. This fosters an atmosphere where each student can really explore their own interests and develop their unique practice, and engage in synergistic collaboration with staff, researchers and other students.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

Over the 16 months of this program, you’ll explore the development of digital media and messaging in many different ways. You’ll look at what he shift from traditional to digital media means in terms of production, distribution, payment and support systems and the role of the artist. You’ll explore how this shift has affected even industries which have not traditionally been associated with media, such as education, government and public health. You’ll learn about the new, highly interdisciplinary field being formed at the intersection of engineering, business, design and art.

This degree can also be taken at the CDM (Centre for Digital Media) as part of a program offered jointly by Emily Carr University, the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University and the British Columbia Institute of Technology. Nonetheless, most of the instruction happens right at Emily Carr or at the Centre for Digital Media within walking distance of the campus in Mount Pleasant.
