    Course Summary

An MSc in Data Science from Goldsmiths University London is a fine way to set yourself apart from bachelor’s level graduates in the computer and data sciences. It will let you compete for the best jobs, and should open doors to a very highly paid career.

The jobs are definitely out there, as well. The world is producing more data than ever before – 2.5 quintillion bytes per day by some estimates. Biomedical data, social media information, retail transactions and climate modelling data are all worth millions, but only if they are properly captured, filtered and manipulated. Only a highly trained data scientist can design the systems which can do that at commercially viable volumes and speeds.

In this program you’ll learn to combine statistical and data analysis techniques with system design and network architecture skills. You’ll be able to create the data mining, machine learning and behaviour prediction solutions that industry demands.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

This degree program is typically delivered over 1 year at full time or 2 years a part time.

    Core Modules:

    • Machine Learning and Statistical Data Mining

This module looks at the most advanced techniques used in data analytics, and gives examples of real world applications.

    • Big Data Applications

This module explores ways to process, analyse and manage ‘big data’ on networks, clusters, servers or stored on the cloud.

    • Data Programming

This is programming specific to data science. It will cover the industry standard tools and techniques and give you the ability to create your own software.

    • Data Science Research Topics

Here you’ll explore concepts like soft computing, forecasting, statistical computing, data mining, machine learning and big data management.

    • Final Project in Data Science

This will be a substantial, independent research project.

    Optional Modules:

    • Artificial Intelligence
    • Data Visualisation and the Web
    • Geometric Data Analysis
    • Interaction Design
    • Introduction to Natural Language Processing

    Neural Networks

    Learning And Teaching

The learning and teaching methods used will include lectures, practical studio work, seminars, tutorials, workshops, laboratory sessions and quite a bit of time in individual, non-directed study. You’ll also gain experience with specialised software packages such as Apache Hadoop Ecosystem, Apache Spark, Apache Storm, IBM SPSS, Python, R, RapidMiner, SAS, Tableau and NoSQL databases such as MongoDB at the university’s state of the art facilities

    Career Possibilities

Data science and specifically ‘big data’ is a specialty which demands thousands more skilled master’s level graduates than the UK can currently produce. Recent graduates of Goldsmiths’ Data Science MSc have become Researchers in Data Science and Data Mining, Python Programmers, NoSQL Database Developers, Hadoop Developers, Big Data Analysts, Data Mining Analysts and Data Scientists more generally. They have taken roles in government, medicine, social science, marketing retail and finance.

    Entry & Credit

Successful completion will result in a 1 year MSc degree.

Applicants must typically have earned a 2:1 or better undergraduate degree in computing, finance, or a hard or mathematical science. Other qualifications are also accepted, and the full list can be found here.

Most classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test. An IELTS score of 6.5 overall, 6.5 in writing and no other sections scoring less than 6.0 would qualify.
