    Course Summary

This degree program can be taken in a single year at full time or on a part time basis over two to three years. You will receive not just an MSc in Ecological Applications but also a PgD upon full completion.

This is an excellent program for those who already have a basic education in ecology or a related field, but wish to learn how that knowledge can be applied in an agricultural, commercial, industrial or other context. You’ll receive a core education in ecology generally, but you’ll also be able to select from a wide range of electives in order to build the kind of expertise you’ll need to support your career goals.

Upon completion, you’ll have amassed a great deal of information about applied ecology. This will include many quantitative research methods such as population modelling, expert system design and statistical analysis, as well as the specific research and writing training you’ll need to publish your findings academically.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Learning & Teaching

All of Harper Adams’ post-graduate degree programs work to meet the needs of students, industry and academic research equally. All modules are taught by lecturers who are actively engaged in research, industry or academia, and sometimes all three. Harper Adams has worked to create a highly connected academic community where you can gain expertise whilst actively contributing to your field and preparing for a successful, rewarding career.

    Career Possiblities

This is a highly respected combined PgD and MSc degree, and Harper Adams’ graduates have gone on to found rewarding, internationally relevant careers with organisations like Natural England, ADAS, Forest Research, FERA, Rothanstead Research, or various ecological consultancies.

However, roughly half of their graduates selected modules which would support a career in Academia rather than public or private sector employment. Many of these have chosen to go on to an advanced degree program, typically a PhD.
