    Course Summary

Sustainable use of the environment’s many resources is an ever growing concern among all of the world’s countries. A BSc in Geography and Environmental Management from Harper Adams University gives you an understanding of how the environment can be managed in a responsible, sustainable manner. It also shows you how to do that whilst still meeting the ever-growing needs of the world’s population.

This is an interdisciplinary degree, and combines an understanding of the world itself with methods for managing it. Residential field courses in your first and fourth years will see that you not only learn about world environments but appreciate them first hand. Of course there are thousands of different environments in even a small country, and a knowledge of geography ensures that you can put these concepts to use in a practical way.

Your third year will be spent in an industrial placement either in the UK or abroad. This will provide something no graduate should be without – real working experience.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

Harper Adams University’s BSc in Geography and Environmental Management will involve traditional lecture classes, tutorials and exams, but will also include residential site visits in actively managed environments and a year-long placement where you will gain vital real world skills and an understanding of working culture in the industry.

You will be assessed based on your coursework, your examination results and of course on the quality of an extensive Honours Research Project in your final year.

    Career Possiblities

Geography has long been regarded as a ‘recession proof’ career choice, and pressures to manage the environment effectively are unlikely to ease any time soon. As a result, employability for graduates of this program is very high. Graduates have gone on to take roles in sustainable society or community development, environmental consultancy, or public services. Alternatively, though, you’ll gain a wide range of transferrable skills which could lead to work in nearly any industry or sector.
