    Course Summary

Harper Adams University’s BEng in Mechanical Engineering has been designed to give graduates a firm grasp of the theory behind mechanical engineering as well as the practical skills they will need to respond to real world industrial challenges. You’ll begin by learning the core concepts of engineering generally, including design, maths, mechanics and materials science. You’ll go on to learn about modelling and simulation techniques and an understanding of process optimisation in the context of industrial manufacturing.

This will be reinforced with practical instruction in the craft of turning, milling, welding and even vehicle operation. You’ll also choose a field of specialisation such as Agricultural Engineering, Off Road Vehicle Design, or a range of other options.

In addition, you’ll spend a year in an arranged industrial placement. This will be a wonderful opportunity to put your theoretical knowledge to work and to build your practical skills in a real world working environment.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Learning & Teaching

Harper Adams University’s engineering degree programs emphasise practical skills as much as they do maths and theory, so you’ll experience many modules which are laboratory or practice based. You will be challenged with real world engineering problems and expected to come up with workable solutions. Your progress will be assessed by exams and coursework, but also by the individual and group engineering projects you will deliver in your final year.

    Career Possiblities

Mechanical engineering is a very far-reaching discipline, and a BEng from Harper Adams can open the door for a wide range of different careers. Recent graduates have found roles working in new product testing, in product design or development, in manufacturing or even in managerial or executive roles, supervising teams of engineers. Your placement year will be particularly important to your career path, as it will represent a year of working experience with specialised skills.

    Entry Credit

This course grants successful graduates a 4 year BEng degree with integrated placement.

Applicants may apply based on an International Baccalaureate with 28 points (or better). They must have a relevant subject at level 5 or better. Other qualifications are accepted, and full details can be found here.
