    Course Summary

This degree program is designed for medical professionals who are currently working within a relevant role, have a great deal of prior experience, and have the full support of their employing body to become an advanced clinical practitioner. This program will give students the advanced theoretical and scientific knowledge, clinical competencies and decision making skills they need to practice autonomously.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

This is a 3 year program, with different exit certifications available after every year. Successful completion will result in either an MSc, PgCert or PgDip, depending on the number of modules taken.

    • If modules 1-3 are successfully completed (60 credits in total), a student could exit with a Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Health Assessment & Clinical Decision Making (PGCert)
    • If modules 5, 5 and 6 are also completed successfully (and additional 150 credits), an exiting student would qualify for a Postgraduate Diploma in Advancing Clinical Practice (PGDip).
    • If module 7 is also completed successfully (an additional 60 credits), graduates would receive the full MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice.

Over these three years you’ll have access to a range of required and optional modules, including:

    • Advanced Work-Based Practice Project
    • Clinical Leadership
    • Health Assessment in Clinical Practice
    • Independent and Supplementary Prescribing for Allied Health Professionals

    Learning & Teaching

This is an intensive degree program, open only to those with prior medical education and clinical experience. It is delivered by several HEIs in the West Midlands, who will use a range of teaching methods. These will likely include:

    • Close supervision and active mentoring
    • Compiling a Clinical Competency Portfolio
    • Inter-professional seminars, tutorials and self-directed learning activities
    • Shadowing of actual clinical interactions
    • Simulated clinical skills demonstrations
    • Written assignments of various kinds

    Career Possiblities

Upon completion of all three years of this program you will have earned more than an MSc degree. You will be recognised as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner as defined by HEWM 2015. As a requirement of being accepted into this program, you will also have an appropriate clinical role waiting for you with your sponsoring organisation.

    Entry Credit

Applicants for the program must typically have achieved a first degree in a relevant subject, at 2:2 or better. This can be bypassed if the applicant has a substantial amount of relevant clinical experience or relevant study experience. The full list of accepted UK qualifications can be found here. International qualifications are also accepted, listed here and here.

However, there are several requirements beyond the academic. Applicants must:

    • Be able to commit to a minimum of one day per week in university or conducting academic activities and one day per week engaged in clinical practice or its equivalent.
    • Have 3+ years of relevant clinical practice experience
    • Have an Advanced Clinical Practice role held for them awaiting course completion
    • Have arranged a qualifying clinical supervisor to support their training
    • Hold a first level Professional Registration with a relevant organisation
    • Hold a qualifying post in a healthcare organisation

All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test.
