    Course Summary

Pharmacists have a hand in nearly every part of the medical system. They are instrumental in designing, developing and delivering medicines to patients, and have made great strides in optimising the way medicines are used by our society. As such, they are in high demand in community pharmacies, doctors’ surgeries and hospitals as well as by the pharmaceutical industry, various medical regulatory bodies and for their role in academic research.

Keele University’s 5 year MPharm degree (with integrated training year) is a comprehensive exploration of the field of pharmacy. The course is essentially identical to the 4 year MPharm course save that the taught components of year 4 are split between years 4 and 5, allowing for a year to be spent in training with one of the university’s partner organisations. In addition, the content of a typical pre-registration year is delivered over the first two years of the program, making this MPharm degree very accessible to overseas students.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

This is a 5 year program, including the integrated training year.

Each year of the program is delivered as a single 120 credit module. Each contains a range of teaching themes, selected to integrate the physical science aspects of the discipline with the ‘softer’ social science aspects. Overall, the modules will maintain a focus on the importance of public health and patient care.

The first year is designated ‘level 4’. Year 2 is ‘Level 5’, etc. You’ll begin by learning a core curriculum that is common to all Pharmacy students at Keele University. Starting at Level 7 (year 4 of 5), you’ll be able to build your own modules by selecting content from a list of elective subjects. Each of these elective subjects will be taught separately in smaller seminars, and will culminate with an extended project. It will be possible to study several separate specialties.

    Learning & Teaching

Keele University has 5 strategic aims when it comes to its teaching methods:

    • To promote truly transformative learning opportunities, full engagement and best practice
    • To encourage inspirational, research-based and creative teaching methods
    • To provide and inclusive, supporting learning community for all students and staff
    • To develop students’ employability, professional attitude, business skills and digital literacy
    • To give students the chance to learn abroad, in business and with volunteering opportunities

    Career Possiblities

Trained Pharmacy graduates are always in high demand, as they represent a rare combination of scientific knowledge and specialised skills. MPharm graduates are needed by organisations working to develop new drugs, to develop existing drugs and treatments, and to prepare and distribute medicines to the public in a safe and carefully regulated manner. Many work in public-facing roles in hospitals and community pharmacies, but many also work in academia, the armed forces, or in medical regulatory bodies.

    Entry Credit

Successful completion will result in a 5 year MPharm degree with Integrated Training Year.

Students must typically have achieved 3 A levels at ABB or better. The full list of accepted UK qualifications can be found here.

International qualifications are also accepted, listed here and here.
