    Course Summary

King’s College London has put together an excellent Computer Science BSc program. It is designed to give students a solid understanding of modern computer systems, in terms of designing them, programming them, troubleshooting and repairing them, and using them to their full potential.

King’s College has an excellent reputation as a teaching facility, and their computer science department represents a very friendly atmosphere. It is also a world powerhouse in the field, though. More than 92% of its research output was ranked at ‘internationally excellent’ or ‘world leading’ by the REF in 2014.

This program is fully accredited by the British Computer Society, demonstrating to employers that its graduates have established the training they need to excel in nearly any sector’s IT settings, and indeed are of sufficient quality to be placed in some of the world’s leading software houses… many of which they will have already had professional contact with, right there in London.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Years 1 and 2:

Your first two years in Kings’ College London’s Computer Science course will focus on the core elements of the discipline. These will include computer system hardware, programming, databases, artificial intelligence, logic and software engineering.

    Year 3:

In year three you will have the opportunity to explore several electives. These can be selected from among your areas of interest, and will help to define your field of special expertise.

In your last year, you will also implement a complex piece of software, under staff supervision.

    Learning & Teaching

This program is taught exclusively within King’s College’s Informatics Department. Several teaching methods will be used, which will include not just traditional style lecture classes but also practical laboratory exercises, group and individual projects, and various tutorial settings.

You will also have many opportunities to speak to your instructors and other members of staff on a one-to-one basis, to ensure your grasp of these complex topics.

    Career Possiblities

Computer Science graduates from King’s have gone on to rewarding careers in management, banking and finance, and of course working on the design, implementation, analysis and maintenance of digital systems at some of the world’s leading software publishers.

The Department of Informatics runs a careers program in cooperation with the Kings College Careers Service. This includes several visits with highly regarded employers within the industry, as well as computer science specific skills sessions. These help ensure both that you have the right industry contacts, but also that you have the skills you need to make the most of them.
