    Course Summary

Lakehead University’s Master of Science (MSc) program in Geology is perfect for students who want to know more about topics like strength testing, experimental rock deformation, paleomagnetism, economic geology, sedimentation, tectonics, mapping, strain analysis, structural geology, geochemistry or mineralogy more generally.  Some 30% of graduates go on to a PhD program, and most have been published.

You’ll be able to select a specialty in either Tectonophysics or Petrochemistry.

    • Tectonophysics specialists conduct both field and laboratory investigations into rock magnetism and structural geology, as well as performing basin analyses.
    • Petrochemistry specialists study lithified sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rocks a well as many kinds of ore deposits.

Lakehead University offers you not just the advantage of learning from world class instructors and researchers, but also the advantage of small class sizes. You’ll be able to develop personal relationships with your instructors, and research has shown that personal attention does more for your grades and future career than any other single factor.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

This degree program is typically delivered over 1 to 2 years.

     Graduate Level Geology Modules Include:

    • Advanced Metamorphic Petrology
    • Advanced Mineralogy
    • Advanced Sedimentology
    • Advanced Stratigraphy
    • Advanced Topics in Geochemistry
    • Advanced Topics in Igneous Petrology I
    • Advanced Topics in Igneous Petrology II
    • Biological, Chemical and Physical Characterization of Soils
    • Experimental Mineralogy and Petrology
    • Geochemistry of Ore Deposits
    • Global Biogeochemical Cycles
    • Mantle Mineralogy
    • Master’s Thesis
    • Methods in Geochemistry
    • Regional Tectonics
    • Stable Isotope Geochemistry
    • Structural Geology of Metamorphic Rock
    • Topics in Geology

The thesis topic must be selected with faculty approval, and will need to submit both hard and digital copies of the write-up before you can complete the program.

Perhaps more important than the coursework, though, is the potential to engage in fieldwork in a range of locations throughout Canada and the world more broadly. Recent field schools have been conducted in Cyprus, for example, and at many locations in Canada’s more geographically interesting corners.

    Learning And Teaching

Lakehead University’s Geology MSc program is delivered primarily through directed research, though you will also attend lectures, interactive seminars and field studies, where you will gain a wide range of both scientific and technical skills.

Lakehead is a small institution, and even lecture classes typically only contain a small group of students who will learn to work closely with each other, learning not just academics but also critical teamwork and communication skills.

    Career Possibilities

After graduating, you’ll have several career options open to you, depending on your area of specialisation and the topic of your thesis. Professional geologists work exploring petrochemical or mineral resources, working as environmental officers for the mining and petrochemical industries, or making former mining operations ecologically safe once more. Geoscientists do more work in the lab and the field, and getting their results published. Both have excellent opportunities to travel and explore.

    Entry & Credit

Successful completion will result in an MSc degree.

Applicants must typically have received a 4 year undergraduate degree, or the international equivalent. However, if the degree is unrelated to Geology, a foundation hear may be required.

All classes are taught in English unless otherwise noted, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test.
