    Course Summary

Lakehead University’s Bachelor of Social Work (Hons) degree program is broadly concerned with making a positive influence by promoting social change, offering advice and counselling to individuals or families, offering assistance to marginalised groups or individuals, or developing better social policy.

The Social Work program is a very flexible one, and is designed to be taken as a dual major alongside a degree in another discipline. Common choices for the second major are Women’s Studies, Indigenous Studies and Gerontology, but you’ll have many options before you. You can also build a specialty all your own, unofficially, by selecting relevant electives form Lakehead’s extensive list.

Lakehead University offers you not just the advantage of learning from world class instructors and researchers, but also the advantage of small class sizes. You’ll be able to develop personal relationships with your instructors, and research has shown that personal attention does more for your grades and future career than any other single factor.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.
