    Course Summary

    As you work towards your MSc in Health Psychology, you’ll study primarily in the Tom Reilly Building, which contains most of LJMU’s state of the art psychology and testing facilities. You’ll learn how people’s intellectual and emotional health affects their physical health and vice versa. You’ll study the way these emotional and spiritual states influence illness, and the affects different sociological frameworks and perspectives have on the process.

    Liverpool John Moores University’s Health Psychology MSc degree program is a great opportunity for Psychology graduates to complete their Stage 1 Training requirement. This takes you one step closer to full British psychological Society registration and a very rewarding professional career. It is also worth noting that many of the registered Health psychologist delivering the program are also Approved Supervisors or Trainers for BPS Stage 2 qualification. That means your next steps towards accreditation could already be laid out for you.

    Course Outline

    This MSc program is delivered over 1 year at full time, but can be taken at part time over 2 years.  

    The program’s stated aims are to give you a rigorous academic framework, in which you can study the psychological processes which affect heath, illness and the way healthcare is delivered. It will strive to teach you how to apply health psychology generally, and give you the skills you’ll need to meet the BPS’s Stage One Training requirement. You can use that perspective to study way to promote health, ways to analyse healthcare provision, or ways to prevent or ameliorate illness.

    You’ll do more than attend classes, though. You’ll deliver an Empirical Project which will allow you to design and explore your own research. You might look at stress and coping strategies, contexts and applications f health psychology, one or more fundamental issues within the discipline or a wide range of other approaches.

    Learning & Teaching

    Full time students will tend taught modules every Monday and Wednesday throughout the first two semesters, typically between the hours of 9 am and 6 pm. You should also expect to spend around 35 hours each week in student-directed learning. In the final semester, you’ll meet regularly with your dissertation supervisor and to present your progress. Your final thesis submission date will be in the latter part of August.

    Career Possiblities

    According to the 2017 HESA, LJMU’s postgraduate employment rate was an impressive 96% at 6 months. The university has very close connections with a wide range of industries, so it is unsurprising that its graduates are highly sought-after. Other students choose to go on to PhD training instead of BPS Stage 2 certification, opting to become researchers. Nay also find roles in health education or institutionalised health care provision.

    Entry Credit

    Successful completion will result in a 1 year MSc degree. It also counts for Stage 1 Training towards BPS certification.

    Applicants must typically have achieved a good undergraduate degree in a psychology-related field. Other UK and overseas qualifications are accepted. The full list of accepted qualifications can be found here.

    All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test. An IELTS score of 6.5 overall with no less than 5.5 in any component would qualify, for example.
