    Course Summary

    Manchester Metropolitan University’s BA in Banking and Finance will prepare you for a career managing the money and other assets entrusted to you profitably, ethically and in full compliance with relevant regulations.

    No prior education or industry experience is required. You’ll learn all of the skills you’ll need to found a career in the banking and financial services industry. These will include accounting and economics, regulation and ethics, financial planning, risk and credit management, wealth management, investment techniques and both corporate and personal finance.

    This program can be taken as a 3 year degree at full time or as a 4 year degree including up to a year in professional placement or study overseas. Overseas study will give you an international perspective on both of these disciplines. A year in work placement will provide critical real-world working experience and a not insubstantial pay check. Both will look great on your CV as well.

    Course Outline

    This BA program is delivered over 3 years at full time. However, a year in working placement or in overseas study can also be added.

    Year 1:

    Your first year will give you a basis in economic and financial skills. Modules include:

    • Economics
    • Financial Accounting
    • Financial Decision Making
    • Financial Sector Responsibilities and Ethics
    • Personal and Professional Development

    Year 2:

    In your second year you’ll explore the intricacies of Banking, Financial Planning and risk with modules like:

    • Economics of Corporate Finance
    • Investment Principles and Risk
    • Personal Financial Planning
    • Retail Banking

    Year 3:

    In your final year you’ll learn how to ply the understanding you’ve gained to real world situations, institutions and markets. Core modules include:

    • Banking, Financial Markets and Institutions
    • Integrated Financial Planning
    • Risk Management in Banking and Insurance

    In addition, you’ll select one from the following list of elective modules:

    • Business Environment and Operations
    • Corporate Financial Management
    • Current Issues in Management Accounting

    International Financial Management

    Learning & Teaching

    For each credit worth of modules you take, you can expect to put in around 10 hours of study time. In addition to the time you’ll spend in lectures, seminars and practical sessions of various kinds you’ll be expected to engage in many hours of independent study. Your marks will be based primarily on your end of term examination results, which form up to 70% of each module’s final grade.

    MMU’s Banking and Finance graduates have an excellent employment rate at six months, largely due to the large numbers of new hires the banking, retail finance, financial planning and wealth management industries demand every year. In addition, major industry employers know that MMU graduates have the levels of skill and integrity they need. Many recruit from among MMU Banking and Finance students even before graduation, based on their work placement experience.

    Entry Credit

    Successful completion will result in a 3 year BA degree, or a 4 year degree with placement or overseas study.

    All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in the English language.
