    Course Summary

Northumbria University’s Business with Financial Management with Advanced Practice MSc degree program is delivered by the internationally recognised Newcastle Business School. You’ll learn a great deal about finance and the complex interaction between business management and financial expertise. This program was developed with non-business graduates in mind, and is a great way to gain general business skills as well as a deep understanding of the financial management field.

The Advanced Practice component gives you the chance to participate in a financial services industry internship or to participate in a group-based consultancy project. Either will help you develop your real-world business skills and will look great on any CV. The university will support students in finding the perfect internship or consultancy project, but the most desirable internships are often highly competitive.

On graduation you’ll be eligible to take up the QA Professional Pathways program, an excellent source for further management training.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

This MSc program is delivered over the course of 16-21 months, depending on your start date.

There are three stages to this program.

In the first, you’ll study a core curriculum which is essentially identical to all of Northumbria University’s business MSc programs. You will learn about the essential functions of all businesses, the practice of strategic management and decision making, and how to develop your analytical and strategic awareness skills. You’ll also study both international management and leadership skills.

In the second stage, you’ll shift to an in-depth study of Financial Management.

In the third stage, you’ll either compete for a 12-15 week internship within the financial services or financial management industries, or engage in a group consultancy project arranged through the university.

    • If you select the internship, you’ll be allotted an internship tutor who will assist you in creating a reflective portfolio.
    • Of you choose the consultancy project, you’ll work with a team of other students to complete a consultancy project for an external business.

    Learning & Teaching

In the first two stages you’ll spend around 14 hours per week in workshops, seminars and lectures. In addition, you’ll be expected to devote around 33 hours per week to independent and/or self-directed study. As well as your module-based coursework, you’ll attend academic support session every week. These are designed to enhance your ability to direct your own postgraduate learning and to build your overall confidence in your abilities.

    Career Possiblities

Northumberland University partners with QA to give graduates of this program free access to their Professional Pathways training program. These will dramatically improve your employability and business skills in general. Though many Northumbria Business MSc graduates intend to take their place in a family operated enterprise, many others join programs like the Northumbria University Graduate Enterprise scheme in order to found their own business ventures. Still others take business or financial management roles in a wide range of industries.

    Entry Credit

Successful completion will result in a 1 year MSc degree.

Applicants must typically have achieved a 2:2 honours degree or better in any subject. Many other qualifications can also accepted. They can be found here.

International students must be fluent in written and spoken English. This can be demonstrated by an IELTS score of 6.5 or better overall and no less than 5.5 in any one segment.
