    Course Summary

A BA in Animation from Norwich University of the Arts will help you secure your own place in the rapidly evolving field of animation. Not only will it give you a broad background in animation generally, it will allow you to choose your own area of special expertise. This will give you the skills you need to work and create within your own niche, whether that turns out to be acting for animation, character sculpting, character design or something else entirely.

You’ll gain skills like CG rigging, 2D compositing and character based animation. You’ll come to understand both the ideas-based and ‘auteur’ approaches to film making. You’ll expand your understanding of storytelling through animation by attending master classes and workshops that focus on character creation, storyboarding and dynamics. You’ll study sound recording and story design. And of course, you’ll master the art of depicting movement by studying expression, performance, character, observation and drawing in depth.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

This is a 3 year program for most students, taken at full time.

    Year 1

Throughout your first year you’ll gain an enhanced understanding of the three core techniques of animation – digital3D animation, stop motion animation and 2D animation (both hand-drawn and digital). In order to apply that knowledge, you’ll study skills like compositing, character design, storyboarding and the theory of narrative structure.

    Year 2

In your second year, you’ll work collaboratively and choose one or more areas in which to specialise. You’ll further develop your skills in these areas and more generally. You’ll also work on understanding the art of storytelling, the language of film and the needs of your audience.

    Year 3

In your final year, you’ll build a professional portfolio of your work. This will include footage from the major collaborative project you’ll take part in, working either with other students or external parties to produce a commercially viable piece.

    Learning & Teaching

This program relies heavily on workshop and studio time. You’ll do a great deal of critical reflection work. You’ll have plenty of time to experiment with different concepts, animation types and ideas on your own and in groups. However, NUA uses many different learning and teaching methods. These typically include large group lectures and tutorials presented either to small groups or individually. You’ll do many group presentations and student-led critiques.

    Career Possiblities

You’ll have many options before you. Recent graduates of Norwich University of the Arts’ Animation BA program have become Lighting Supervisors, Colour Co-Ordinators, Illustrators, Modellers, Storyboard Artists, Set Designers, Layout Artists, Background Artists, Character Designers, Compositors, Directors of Photography, Art Directors, Editors, Designers, Animators and SFX Animators or even Producers.

The Careers Team and NUA’s unique Ideas Factory can help you explore your options, and to plot your ideal career path.

    Entry Credit

Successful completion will result in a 3 year BSc degree.

Applicants must typically have achieved 3 A Levels at BBB or the international equivalent. Beyond that, a wide range of qualifications are accepted.

All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test.
