    Course Summary

    The oil, gas and mining industries are becoming ever more significant to international law, political machinations and regulatory policy at nearly every level. As such, experts on this aspect of UK and international law are always in high demand.

    NTU’s LLM in Oil, Gas and Mining Law will give you expertise in a rapidly growing industry, and give you what you need to take a position as in-house counsel, with a regulatory body on the national or international levels, or to set up your own practice with a wide range of different specialties.

    You’ll come to understand the key legal issues in this field, explore how relevant laws and regulations affect the industries economically, and build a specific area of expertise which matches your interests and intended career path.

    Course Outline

    This course incudes 6 required modules, and 2 that can be selected from nearly any NTU offers. However, it is advisable to select them from the Commercial Law or International Trade lists, as these will be most relevant to the degree material.

    Dissertation

    After completing the taught modules you will undertake a dissertation. This will be a substantial piece, written to high academic standards. You will research this independently, though you will be supported at every step by a tutor who is chosen for their expertise in the field and relevance to the subject of your dissertation. So long as a tutor with the appropriate expertise is available, you may select nearly any relevant topic for your dissertation.

    Learning & Teaching

    This course is delivered in three terms. The first two will be dedicated to taught modules. These will be a mix of lecture classes, guided reading and small, highly interactive seminars. You will also be expected to do a great deal of guided preparatory work and to make in-class contributions or presentations. The last term will be largely dedicated to your dissertation.

    Career Possiblities

    Many graduates of the Oil, Gas and Mining Law LLM of course go on to practice in the petroleum or mining industries. The course material is specifically geared to help your job search, which is one of the reasons that 99% of NTU’s LLM graduates were employed or taking higher level degree programs within six months of successfully completing the program, according to the 2016/2017 DLHE.

    Entry Credit

    Entry Requirements for UK and EU-nationals

    Applicants for this LLM must have a 2:2 law degree or better. However, applicants with degrees from other disciplines can be accepted if they have industry experience, even if not in a legal context.

    Entry Requirements for overseas (non-EU) students

    Overseas students must have achieved an equivalent level of academic accreditation to EU and UK students. A list of the overseas accreditations accepted can be found here.
