    Course Summary

OCAD University’s Bachelor of Design (BDes) program in Material Art & Design is largely studio-based, and is taught by leaders, researchers and practitioners who are well known throughout the industry.

You’ll choose between 2 degree pathways, one focusing on textiles, the other on jewellery and metal smithing. Alternatively, you can choose your own degree foci from a list including ceramics, wearable technology, furniture design and many other topics.

    • The textile pathway will see you creating printed, woven and experimental fabric types and applying the latest production technologies. You’ll then use these materials to create art, clothing or surface decorations.
    • The jewellery and metal smithing pathway will see you exploring traditional and technological methods of creating jewellery, sculpture and other metal forms.

Material Art & Design is a highly competitive field, where a degree from an internationally recognised school like the Ontario College of Art and Design University can be a big boost to your employability, especially in your early career.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.
