    Course Summary

OCAD University’s Bachelor of Design (BDes) program in Printmaking is a way to explore both the commercial and artistic possibilities of this traditional creative craft.

You’ll explore the five core processes of printmaking:

    • Paper Making
    • Screen Printing
    • Relief Printing
    • Lithography
    • Etching

You’ll be able to explore each of these in turn, and can specialise in one or more processes by selecting optional modules.

You’ll also have many opportunities to gain experience doing commercial work in a real world context. Placements are available, as are exhibitions and other means of getting the exposure you’ll need to forge a successful career.

Photography is a highly specialised field, and you’ll need to find a way to distinguish yourself from the crown to gain the best positions. A degree from a well-respected university like the Ontario College of Art and Design can be a big boost to your employability, especially in your early career.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

OCAD University’s BDes programs each focus on both practical and academic training. They use many different teaching methods, including lecture based classroom instruction and a great deal of studio time. You’ll learn to use state of the art technologies, the latest design techniques and diligent academic research as well.

In addition, you’ll gain real world training opportunities, which can range from experiential learning placements or internships to client-facing design projects, freelance opportunities or gallery exhibitions.

    Career Possibilities

You’ll have many options as to a career once you graduate. Some Printmaking students opt to continue their education at least long enough to do master’s level work or achieve professional certification in fields like museum studies, curation, critical theory or art. Others go directly into work, becoming practicing artists, educators, web, graphic or digital designers, gallery administrators, commercial print production experts, online or alternative publishers or commercial designers.

Successful completion will result in a 4 year BDes degree.

To apply, you’ll need to meet the entrance requirements, as well as submit your portfolio and a statement of intent as well as your official transcripts.

All classes are taught in English, unless otherwise specified. International students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test.
