    Course Summary

An MSc in Computer Science from Oxford Brookes University is perfect for recent s graduates or for applicants with extensive computing industry experience but who lack the Master’s level degree they need to advance their careers to the next step. The program is accredited by BCS, the UK’s Chartered Institute for IT. Successful completion of the MSc degree meets all of the academic requirements for registering as a Chartered IT Professional and puts you well on your way to becoming a Chartered Engineer, should you choose that path.

This is typically a 1 year program, but can stretch to two years with an optional year in industrial placement. That is a particularly good idea for recent graduates who have little or no real world experience. Alternatively, this program can be taken as a PG Diploma in as little as 6 months or a PG Certification in only 3. In all cases, the taught modules can be taken at part time and fit around your other commitments.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

This is a 1 year program for most students, but can be taken at part time across 2 years.

The program can be taken either as a Postgraduate Certificate, a Postgraduate Diploma or a full Master’s of Science degree.

    • The MSc program is outlined below. You’ll need to pass a full 180 credits of 20 credit modules, as well as completing a 60 credit dissertation satisfactorily.
    • If you do complete your MSc requirements, you will qualify to extend your degree with a year in work placement. This will set you apart from other untried graduates in the field, and make you much more able to compete for the best roles.
    • The PD Dip program requires you to pass either all six taught modules or 3 modules and the dissertation, as arranged with academic staff.
    • The PG Cert program requires only passing 3 of the 20 credit taught modules or to complete a single 60 credit Computer science Research project.

    Learning & Teaching

Oxford Brookes’ MSc in Computer Science uses several different teaching methods, as appropriate to each module. Lectures are used to deliver broad theoretical concepts. Practical sessions convey certain skills and cement learning by active participation. Projects and other coursework give you a chance to actually use your skills and provide a basis for your abilities to be assessed by staff. You will also attend guest speakers from the industry and from prominent research groups.

    Career Possiblities

The computer science and IT industry is in desperate need for high level graduates, and those who successfully complete their Computer Science MSc, PG Dip or PG Cert qualifications rarely struggle to find high profile work. Recent graduates have accepted positions with IT and telecommunications providers, the IT departments of international organisations, or more responsible roles in small software houses or start-ups. Some design software, others provide advanced product support or maintain IT infrastructure.

    Entry Credit

Successful completion will result in a 1 year MSc degree.

Applicants must typically have achieved a 2:2 Honours degree in a CS related subject, or the international equivalent. Beyond that, a wide range of qualifications are accepted.

All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test.
