    Course Summary

    Public Health is an increasingly complex field where people from many different backgrounds work to prevent disease, prolong life and promote healthy habits amongst the population at large. It has to do with all health-impacting factors, and public health specialists work with groups of all sizes, form global populations and societies down to communities, families and even individuals.

    Plymouth Marjon University’s Master of Public Health degree program is a unique take on the Master’s degree, as it combines both professional and academic elements, intended to truly let you ‘master’ the highly interdisciplinary field of public health. It is designed both for newcomers to the field of public health and working professionals.

    You’ll learn in class, but also by engaging with real world organisations to pursue public health projects on the practical and policy development levels.

    This program is currently seeking accreditation by APHEA. In addition, it is seeking Faculty of Public Health accreditation for the program’s CPD modules.

    Course Outline

    This program is typically delivered over 3 semesters. The time commitment required is expected to be 3 full days and one half day each week, so it should fit well around most work schedules.

    Semester 1 Modules Include:

    • Introduction to Public Health

    Here you’ll explore the basics of the discipline.

    • Quantitative Research

    This module will teach you subject specific research techniques.

    • Health Promotion

    You’ll learn the core function of the discipline – promoting health publicly.

    • Epidemiology of Non-Communicable Disease

    You’ll look at the many ways illnesses and health issues spread amongst populations.

    • Leadership for Public Health

    This module will help you rise to the top within your field.

    Semester 2 Modules Include:

    • Public Health Policy & Politics

    Here you’ll look at the complexities of public health policy.

    • Qualitative Research

    This module goes beyond numbers to explore new ways of researching issues.

    • Public Health Economics

    Economics is deeply linked to public health, and you’ll explore how.

    • Health Protection

    Here you’ll learnt h principles of safeguarding heath.

    Semester 3 Modules Include:

    • Dissertation

    Learning & Teaching

    Plymouth Marjon University uses fairly standard teaching methods. These include the familiar modes of large, formal lectures, smaller and more interactive seminars, online learning sessions and classroom activities. However, there is also a great deal of emphasis on gaining practical, real world skills. These will be delivered both at the university and through work-based or consultancy projects. You’ll also deliver a final project which includes an aspect of professional discussion.

    Career Possiblities

    More than 95% of Marjon’s graduates find suitable work (or enter into higher degree programs) within 6 months of successfully completing their degrees. You’ll be in a strong position to apply for a range of public health positions on the local, national or international levels. You might pursue a career in health advocacy, research, health policy development, direct health promotion, health education or epidemiology. Alternatively, this degree could give you better promotion potential within your current organisation.

    Entry Credit

    Successful completion will result in a 1 year MPH degree.

    Applicants must typically have earned a 2:2 or better first degree in a health related subject, or the international equivalent. The full list of qualifications which are accepted can be found here.

    All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test. An IELTS score of 6.5 or better overall would qualify, for example.
