    Course Summary

Portsmouth’s BSc in Economics, Finance and Banking is the perfect choice for students who want to understand the banking industry in depth, and truly get a feel for how financial markets operate. This program will ensure that you get a solid grounding in economic theory as well as a practical, results-oriented understanding of the finance and banking industries.

    During this 3 year program, you’ll learn directly from researchers who are changing the way economics and finance are understood. You’ll understand how economics can direct banking and financial planning and decision making, and gain practical experience with industry standard econometric software packages.

    You’ll earn a Bloomberg certification by the time you graduate, letting employers know that you can correctly analyse market movements in real time and make rapid investment decisions using the Bloomberg Suite trading platform.

    Learning & Teaching

    You’ll experience a wide range of teaching techniques as you explore the different modules on offer. These will include standard lectures and seminar sessions, but will also include module-specific practical and technology sessions, interactive tutorials and many different skills workshops.

    In addition, the Academic Skills Unit offers a wide range of extracurricular support on areas like academic writing, time management, note taking, presentation skills, revision skills and exam taking techniques.

    Career Possiblities

    The skills you learn in this BSc program will prepare you to work in risk management, tax consultancy or either commercial or investment banking. Recent graduates have found roles as Financial Analysts, Account Managers, Traders, Econometricians and Purchasing Officers at organisations like Barclays, JP Morgan and Merrill Lynch.

    Entry Credit

    Successful completion will result in a 3 year BSc degree or a 4 year BSc with work experience.

    Applicants must typically have achieved 1 year of HE study with at least 112 first year credits. 3 A levels are also required. Other qualifications may be accepted, however.  

    All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to achieve an IELTS score of 6.0 overall with no section scoring less than 5.5. Other tests can also be accepted, at similar levels of achievement.
