    Course Summary

The BSc program in Agricultural Technology at Queen’s University Belfast is designed to help Northern Ireland’s (and the world’s) agricultural professionals cope with local, national, European and global policy changes as well as an increasingly volatile natural environment.

You’ll gain a better understanding of crop and animal production systems (especially in terms of sustainability), the impacts of government and international policies on the agricultural industry and how to manage an agricultural business. Perhaps more importantly, you’ll learn how to approach the work environment professionally, how to manage and evaluate project work, and how to devise appropriate environmental management strategies.

You can also take this BSc as Agricultural Studies with Professional Studies. This version will combine the above with a better understanding of how to apply your degree to the modern workplace. You will also be supported with career management planning assistance

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

Delivered in cooperation between Queen’s and the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise, this program takes advantage of a wide range of facilities and expert educators. Years 1 and 2 are delivered at CAFRE’s Greenmount Campus and Estate Farm, while year 3 is taught at Queen’s academic facilities. As such, the learning at teaching methods will be suitably geared towards practicality in the early stages.

    Career Possiblities

Most graduates will be seeking a career in agriculture itself or in the agri-food or agri-environmental sectors. Of the latter, many take roles relating to commercial R&D, production and management, marketing or sales.

Many employment opportunities flow from the year of work placement that is a prominent feature of this program. These have been arranged locally and internationally, with agricultural concerns as far afield as New Zealand.
