    Course Summary

The MArch program at Queen’s University Belfast offers a master’s level degree in Architecture with both RIBA and ARB certifications. It is the perfect first step towards a professional qualification as an architect.

You’ll be working together with academics and practicing architects present as consultants to fully comprehend and then critically assess the relationship between research and design. You’ll use lateral thinking, creativity and your own problem solving skills to engage with relevant architectural issues, fully engaging with the discipline and its place in our culture.

The Erasmus Scheme gives you an opportunity to study at a European university as well, in places such as Croatia, Turkey, Spain and Germany.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

This program is delivered over the course of 2 years. Each year will consist of 4 taught modules, 2 per term.

You’ll be part of several thematic groups during the two years of this program. Each will give you access to a broad range of architectural design challenges and skills, and will reflect the current work and passions of the various consultants and instructors that contribute to it.  Students are encouraged to move between research and studio groups between years, to get a wider mix of instructors and teaching methods.

    Year 1 Modules:

    • Arch Studio 1
    • Architectural Research: Humanities Dissertation (project work)
    • Arch Studio 2
    • Architectural Research: Technology Dissertation (project work)

In addition, year one will include a Student Experience field trip to a city in mainland Europe. Other field trips are also likely. You can use this as an opportunity to develop and redefine the relationship between research, architectural design and critical praxis, exploring deliberately challenging architectural propositions.

    Year 2 Modules:

    • Arch Studio 3
    • Thesis Research
    • Arch Studio 4
    • Professional Skills

    Learning & Teaching

Though formally divided into 4 terms, this program is essentially taught as a single unit. There is a heavy emphasis on self-directed study, and students are encouraged to set ambitious agendas for themselves. All of their efforts will be aided by academic staff who are both expert and enthusiastic about the discipline.
