    Course Summary

    A BSc degree in Computer Science from Robert Gordon University will prepare you to excel in one of the fastest growing fields in the UK today. You’ll learn to design state of the art software systems and implement than in ways that meet the needs of a wide range of different industries.

    One of the things you’ll study is object-oriented software engineering. This is the skill most highly in demand in industry and commercial applications today. You’ll also learn to apply your skills to all of the computing platforms which have become industry standards.

    With a solid background and real, practical experience in both object oriented programming and software design, you could join nearly any organisation as a Software Developer or in a range of related roles.     Course Outline

    This program is typically delivered over five years at full time.

    Year 1

    In your first year, you’ll learn to design and develop software, to collaborate with a team and to adapt information technology for real, industrial purposes.

    Year 2

    By year 2, you’ll be learning advanced software development techniques as applied to different standard platforms. You’ll also come to understand te professional, legal and ethical aspects of your work.          

    Year 3

    Year three is typically spent in an industrial work experience placement. It is also possible to take a shorter placement in the summer, or to arrange a placement in year 4.

    Year 4  

    In year four you’ll explore advanced software engineering as well as mobile, operating system and security applications.

     Year 5           

    Your final year will see you tacking advanced modules such as Artificial Intelligence and Enterprise Development. In addition, you will complete and deliver a substantial individual project.

    Learning & Teaching

    Robert Gordon University relies on several teaching methods. However, almost all modules make extensive use of both formal lectures and more interactive tutorials. Students will typically spend 4 hours per week in lectures, in groups of around 40 students. They will spend approximately one hour each week in practical, laboratory sessions, again in groups of 40.  Students will spend another hour each week in project supervision, in much smaller 4-student groups.

    RGU’s BSc (Hons) in Computer Science offers you a huge boost to your employability in the form of a year-long work placement opportunity. These positions are paid, and will give you vital real world experience in your intended specialisation. Many recent RGU Computer Science graduates now work with large software developers, small start-ups or in their own businesses as Service Providers, Application Developers, Web Developers, Software Engineers and many similar roles.

    Entry Credit

    Successful completion will result in a BSc (Hons) degree.

    Students must typically have achieved 3 A Levels at BCC or better before they can apply, but other qualifications are also accepted. The full list of accepted qualifications can be found here.

    All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test. An IELTS score of 6.0 overall with no section lower than 5.5 would qualify, for example.
