    Course Summary

Accounting is one of the most important skills in the business world today, and few organisations, no matter how small, can operate without at least one expert in accounting to help keep their books straight, ensure they deal with taxation issues competitively and ethically, and operate all of their business processes efficiently.

Saint Mary’s University offers several degrees in Accounting, ranging from Bachelor’s level degrees to an MBA:

    • Commerce degree with a Major in Accounting

After enrolling in St Mary’s Commerce program, any student with 45 credit hours and a GPA of 2.0 or better may declare a Major in Accounting.

    • Commerce degree leading to CPA designation

Even without a Major in accounting, you can select modules which will meet all of the requirements for the CPA Professional Education Program.

    • Master of Business Administration – CPA stream

This allows you to earn an MBA degree as well as gain advanced standing in the CPA Professional Education Program. You can write the CPA exam immediately on completion.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Learning And Teaching

Saint Mary’s University relies on a wide range of learning and teaching methods. They seek to blend both traditional and innovative techniques to produce a unique curriculum appropriate to each degree they offer. For example, you’ll attend large lecture classes but also smaller and more interactive seminars and tutorial sessions. Many subjects have experiential or co-operative learning content. The Accounting program includes the chance to participate in student business competitions.

    Career Possibilities

A degree including Accounting content can lead to many different careers in the public, private and not for profit sectors. Many Baccalaureate level students stay on for a Master’s or MBA degree, though many others go directly into working in their chosen field. Saint Mary’s Accounting graduates have historically become controllers, internal or external auditors, entrepreneurs or business owners, business analysts, finance professionals, tax socialists and of course certified public accountants.

    Entry & Credit

St Mary’s offers both Baccalaureate and Master’s level programs in Accounting.

Applicants at the Baccalaureate level must typically have completed a secondary school education or the international equivalent. Great weight will be given to the GPA earned by your final year.

All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test.
