    Course Summary

Seneca College offers a 3 year Advanced Diploma in Biotechnology. In addition to allowing you access to a wide range of biotechnology careers, this diploma will also qualify you to work as a research technologist in nearly any life sciences field.

You’ll learn about many topics, such as Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, Computers, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Histology, Biochemical Techniques, Virology, Tissue Culture, Immunology, Molecular Genetics and more. You’ll also have access to two work-integrated learning terms which will give you real world experience.

As this program includes a ‘core’ first semester with several of Seneca College’s other science based diplomas, it is possible to transfer between any two of these programs before you begin your second semester. That list includes the Chemical Laboratory Technology – Pharmaceutical, Chemical Laboratory Technician and Chemical Engineering Technology programs.

Note that you’ll have to maintain a GPA of at least 2.5 to continue on to the third year (Advanced) portion of this program.

    Learning And Teaching

Seneca College’s Biotech Diploma program incorporates all of the standard classroom and laboratory teaching methods you would expect: large lectures, smaller seminars and practical lab skills tutorials. However, it also offers experiential learning options which can give you actual working experience and the seeds of an extensive professional contact network in your chosen field or industry. You’ll find both to be incredibly useful when searching for your first few roles.

    Career Possibilities

You’ll graduate with highly sought after laboratory skills as well as a deep understanding of the procedures used in today’s biotechnology industry. You can pursue professional affiliation with organisations like the Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC) or the Canadian Society of Microbiologists (CSM), and will be qualified to take on roles at research labs (academic, hospital and government-run), analytical roles (pharmaceutical, plastics, waste water or chemical), or roles involving environmental or metallurgical assessment.

    Entry & Credit

Successful completion will result in a 3 year Advanced Diploma Biotechnology.

To apply, you should have an Ontario Secondary School diploma including grade 11-12 Maths, Biology, Chemistry and English, an ACE Certification or the international equivalent.

All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test.
