    Course Summary

When one imagines a surgery, one assumes that everyone in the operating room is a doctor or a nurse. In fact, there are many medical professionals present who are neither. Skilled operating department practitioners of all kinds are needed to keep both NHS and private medical facilities running – often more than the UK’s universities can produce.

A BSc in Operating Department Practice from Sheffield Hallam University is designed to turn out highly skilled graduates who can assist doctors and surgeons during medical interventions and surgeries. On graduation, you’ll be able to register with the Health Care Professions Council as an operating department practitioner.

You’ll learn via classes and a range of clinical placements in hospital operating theatres. You’ll develop advanced interdisciplinary collaborative skills by working with students from a wide range of social or health care professions, and through closely supervised work with actual patients in various clinical contexts.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Year 3 (Placement)

Sheffield Hallam University will help to arrange placements throughout your Operating Department practice training, but your third year will be primarily spent in clinical placement. This will almost certainly be in cooperation with an NHS teaching hospital.

You’ll be working in the heart of an actual operating theatre, learning directly from a mentor with years of experience in this unique role. This kind of real world patient-facing experience is vital to building your skills and achieving accreditation through the Health Care Professions Council.

    Learning & Teaching

Though you will certainly learn in traditional academic ways as well, this program is extremely focused on practical skills and learning to work in a clinical context. You’ll be responsible for managing your own learning process. This will involve classroom sessions, sessions guided by a tutor or by yourself, and a wide range of simulated practice sessions. These involve a simulated working environment where you will learn as a team with other students.

    Career Possiblities

The clinical placement portion of this degree should not be underestimated. You’ll spend a great deal of time learning by doing, practicing the skills you’ll need with real patients in a teaching hospital context. By the time you graduate, you’ll have the skills that you need to take on a role in education, in a sterile supply department, on a transplant team, in an A&E department, or on the operating floor working with anaesthesiologists and surgeons.
