    Course Summary

A Master of Science in Social Psychology from Simon Fraser University prepares you for a wide range of careers in the private, public or not-for-profit sectors, or to take up a professional practice.  However, please note that this is not a ‘Terminal Master’s’ program. SFU’s Social Psychology programs do not accept students who plan to leave academia with a Master’s, but is rather designed to transition students directly into PhD level studies.

You’ll learn to use experimental, correlational, qualitative, longitudinal and observational research methods, both in the laboratory and the field. You’ll study the social landscape I which people live – the relationships they form with others, the small groups and large communities to which they belong, and the way these affect the way people think, feel and behave. You’ll also explore the many ways that human responses to that social environment shape it at the same time it shapes them.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

The degree programs below are typically delivered over 2 years of part time study. Your learning will be heavily research-based, and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to contribute to the world-leading social psychological research programs the SFU faculty run.

You’ll split your time primarily between coursework and direct engagement with the faculty’s research work.

Within the realm of social psychology research, Simon Fraser University has six primary foci:

    • Pro-environmental attitudes and behaviour
    • Prejudice and discrimination, intergroup contact, and collective action
    • Happiness, well-being
    • Collective identity and intergroup relations
    • Altruism, prosocial behaviour, and social support
    • Adjustment and functioning in intimate relationships

You’ll also get the chance to conduct your own research in SFU’s famous psychological laboratories, such as:

    • Dr  Stephen Wright’s Intergroup Relations and Social Justice Lab
    • Dr Lara Aknin’s Helping and Happiness Lab
    • Dr Michael T. Schmitt’s Sustainability Inequality and Social Change Lab
    • Dr Yuthika Girme’s Supporting Relationships and Wellbeing Lab

Other graduates have pursued careers as Political Strategists, Public Relations Specialists, Social Services Representatives, Technology Designers, Marketing Directors and Managers, or as Researchers, Consultants or Educators in the field.

    Entry & Credit

Successful completion will result in an MSc degree.

Admission is very competitive, as the university typically only accepts between 15 and 20 of more than 200 applicants every year. You’ll need a suitable Bachelor’s degree (or international equivalent) at the very least.

All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test.
