    Course Summary

A BA in International relations from SOAS gives students an extremely deep insight into politics, conflict and cooperation between the world’s many states. It includes an appreciation of history, the international economy, and the natures of the individual cultures on the international stage today. In addition, it allows students in the last years of the program to take highly specialised modules which explore various African, Middle Eastern and Asian international relations in extreme detail.

You’ll start with a core curriculum which will explain the concepts of international relations generally, especially in terms of Global History and Political Analysis. You’ll soon be able to add optional modules that explore concepts like the interaction of Islam and democracy, the roles of government and politics in Middle Eastern cultures, or political theory generally.

In your final year, you’ll be able to conduct and independent study project as well as apply for a range of internships in line with your specialty.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

    Year 1

There are three required modules in the first year: Introduction to International Relations, Introduction to Global History and Introduction to Political Analysis. You’ll also be able to select 30 credits from the Guided Options or Open Options lists. It is worth noting that the required modules and guided options are all full-year courses, not single semester.

    Year 2

Year two will see you selecting all of your modules from various options lists. 60 credits must come from the Year 2 Guided Options list, 30 credits from the Regional Modules list and the final 30 credits can come from almost any Year Two list. Again, the Guided Options are all full-year modules.

    Year 3

In your final year 30 credits must be selected from Year Three List A, and the remainder can be selected from Year Three Lists A or B. Optionally, 30 credits can also come from the Open Option list.

    Learning & Teaching

The teaching methods used in SOAS’s International Relations BA are unusual in that there is a heavy emphasis on individual attention and one on one mentoring. Initially, you will see mostly tutorial and seminar modules with large lecture classes being rare. By your third year, you’ll be able to select the Independent Study project module, which will be delivered with the direct support of a specific member of the academic staff.

    Career Possiblities

SOAS’ BA in International Relations gives you a broad knowledge base with nearly unlimited application. You’ll also pick up some very important transferrable skills, including critical thinking, research and analysis skills, the ability to interpret and present complex information and a deep understanding of some of the most prominent of today’s global powers. Many graduates go into politics or academia, but others have gone into either the public or private sectors as managers or professionals of various kinds.

    Entry Credit

Applicants must typically have achieved 3 A Levels at AAA or higher, an International Baccalaureate at 37 (6/6/6), or the international equivalent. The full list of accepted qualifications can be found here.

All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on the IELTS or a similar test.
