    Course Summary

Staffordshire University’s LLM and MA program is the next step on your journey to becoming a solicitor. It is in essence an LPC - the practical portion of you legal education, following on from your undergraduate instruction. As such, it is the step many students follow after attaining their GDL or law degree. You must have met all GPD/GDL requirements or have achieved a Qualifying Law Degree before you may begin this course.

This is an intensive, 1 year course which includes both a foundation and two face to face courses totalling 13 days of instruction. In addition, you will do a great deal of on-line learning and self-directed study, amounting to some 32 hours each week. It is for all practical purposes a full time university course and is generally inappropriate for anyone who holds a full time working position already.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    • You’ll study litigation in the courts. This will include the practice of Criminal Law, Dispute Resolution and Civil Litigation. This will include finding options.
    • You’ll explore Business Law. This will include the interpretation and drafting of business documents, learning about tax issues, and practice advising business clients on a wide range of transactions.

You’ll study Writing, Drafting, Advocacy, Interviewing and conducting Practical Legal Research.

You’ll also select at least 3 electives chosen from the following list:

    • Corporate and Commercial Client
    • Commercial Property
    • Employment Law
    • Family Law
    • Advanced Criminal Practice
    • Advanced Civil Litigation and Dispute Resolution
    • Private Client

This will allow you to select a specialty for yourself in accordance with your career plans.

    Learning & Teaching

Taught modules will include large lectures and smaller seminars. They will often also include skills workshops and practical laboratory work, depending on the subject matter of the module in question. Seminars pick up where the lectures leave off, allowing groups of 16 to 18 students.

You will be assessed based on your performance in simulated client-based scenarios and ‘open book’ type tests which will show the skills you’ve amassed, rather than the information you’ve memorised.

    Career Possiblities

The university has well established connections with a wide range of law practices on the local and national levels, many of which feature alumni in prominent positions. You may take advantage of these connections to seek out a training contract as your next step. Alternatively, you will have the skills required to accept work as a paralegal upon graduation. This is what many students do while they seek out training contract opportunities.

    Entry Credit

Successful completion will result in a 1 year LLM degree.

Applicants must typically have achieved a qualifying law degree, but other qualifications are also accepted. The full list of accepted qualifications can be found here.

All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test.
