    Course Summary

Psychology is the study of the mind, but also the study of human behaviour both individually and in groups. It looks at the factors which influence behaviour, what people want, and the strategies they use to get it (both successfully and unsuccessfully).

A BSc degree in Psychology could be the first step to a career as a practicing psychologist, or to making a career for yourself in almost any field which involves managing, assisting or dealing with people – that is, nearly any role you can imagine. You’ll be able to design and conduct experiments, and derive valuable scientific knowledge form the results.

A degree like this will not only give you a solid background in human behaviour, it will teach you to apply the latest evidence-based theories to actual behaviours, people and events. You’ll be able to recognise what people are doing, and make very good prediction about how and why they are doing it.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

This degree program is typically delivered over 4 years at full time, including a foundation year.

In the first part of the degree program, you’ll work to develop your basic psychological skillset, and to become an inquisitive, independent learner. In the latter parts, you’ll be able to chart your own educational course by choosing from a range of elective modules which are not listed here. These change from year to year, but typically allow you to specialise in a wide range of sub-fields.

    Foundation Year Modules:

    • Foundations in Psychology
    • Social and Applied Psychology
    • Experimental Design and Research Methods
    • Information Technology and Study Skills

    Year 1 Modules:

    • Foundations in Psychology
    • Perspectives in Psychology
    • Introduction to Research Methods in Psychology
    • Comparative Basis of Behaviour
    • People Behaving Badly

    Year 2 Modules:

    • Cognitive and Biological Determinants of Behaviour
    • Understanding the Social World
    • Contemporary Issues in Psychology
    • Further Research Methods

    Year 3 Modules:

    • Psychology Project
    • Typical and atypical Development

    Learning & Teaching

Taught modules will include large lectures and smaller seminars. They will often also include skills workshops and practical laboratory work, depending on the subject matter of the module in question. Seminars pick up where the lectures leave off, allowing groups of 16 to 18 students to drill much deeper into the material than is possible in a large lecture hall. You will have several opportunities to test yourself with practice assessment before the final assessment.

    Career Possiblities

As this degree program is accredited by the British Psychological Society, you will be able to move into a postgraduate program in either clinical, forensic, sports, health, occupational, counselling or educational psychology and begin practicing. You might work in a clinical, industrial, commercial or public sector capacity. Other graduates take the skills they’ve built and found a non-practicing career in education, care, welfare or health. These skills are highly transferrable, after all.

    Entry Credit

Successful completion will result in a 3 year BSc degree.

Applicants must typically have earned 112 UCAS Tariff Points, but other qualifications are also accepted. The full list of accepted qualifications can be found here.

All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test.
