    Course Summary

Local and international tourism are two of the fastest growing industries today, both within the UK and abroad. They account for a substantial portion of recent job growth in the UK, and experts predict much more for the industries. A Tourism Management degree from Staffordshire University will prepare you to take a responsible place in a tourism-oriented organisation, and turn that into a rewarding and exciting career.

This course is designed to be most useful to students who already hold a DipHE, and HND or a similar qualification from an overseas organisation. It adds to that qualification, turning it into an internationally recognised BA from a well-respected university.

The program’s curriculum was developed in cooperation with the Hospitality, Leisure, sport and Tourism network, and the university has strong links with many organisations operating in this industry. That means you’ll have a huge advantage when it comes time to look for your first job!

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

This degree program is typically delivered over a single year at full time. It is considered a ‘bolt on’ year 3, where years one and two are represented by your HND/DipHE or equivalent educational experience.

It is delivered by Staffordshire University’s celebrated Business School, and gives you access not only to dedicated learning spaces but also the conference rooms and so called ‘collaboratories’ to work on group projects.

    Year 3 Modules Include:

    • Tourism in Action
    • Professional Choice
    • International Tourism Marketing
    • Contemporary Issues in Tourism and Events
    • Tourism management Project

Most modules are worth 30 credits, though some only account for 15. You can expect to spend a total of ten hours studying for each credit in each module, so you can expect to spend 1,200 hours of your time studying in class and on your own over the course of 2 4½ month semesters. The first of these semesters typically starts in September.

    Learning & Teaching

Taught modules will include large lectures and smaller seminars. They will often also include skills workshops and practical laboratory work, depending on the subject matter of the module in question. Seminars pick up where the lectures leave off, allowing groups of 16 to 18 students to drill much deeper into the material than is possible in a large lecture hall. You will have several opportunities to test yourself with practice assessment before the final assessment.

    Career Possiblities

This course prepares you for a management or other leadership role in an industry that had been going from strength to strength for many years. Organisations in both the national and international tourism spaces demand more skilled managers than the world’s universities can produce, so graduate employment levels are typically quite high. Recent graduates have accepted positions as Cabin Crew, Business Travel Consultants, Tourism Planning and Development Officers and Events Managers.

    Entry Credit

Successful completion will result in upgrading your existing qualification to a full BA degree.

Applicants must typically have earned an HND/DipHE qualification in Tourism, but other qualifications are also accepted. The full list of accepted qualifications can be found here.

All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test.
