    Course Summary

Brighton University’s MSc program in Economics and Finance is of interest both to recent undergraduates with a business related degree and to those who have worked in their field for years. There is even a ‘Business BSc Top-up’ program that you can use as a foundation year if you have an HND or similar qualification but no degree at the Baccalaureate level.

You’ll learn how to use advanced quantitative analysis techniques to fully understand the risks and benefits of financial opportunities, and to explain them to a non-technical audience.

This degree program can be taken as a full MSc, or in an accelerated program as a PgDip or even a PgCert. In the end, this allows you the flexibility of determining your own desired degree or certification status, as well as how much time and effort you wish to commit to the program. The differences in the various award pathways are described below.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

This program is typically delivered over a single year at full time.

Though this is presented as an MSc program, there are three levels of certification you can be awarded. If you complete the first semester modules – economics, finance and research methods, you can exit with a Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert). If you complete the second semester, consisting of more specialised finance and banking modules, you’ll qualify for a Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip). Finally, if you complete the Dissertation requirement in the final semester, you can exit with the full MSc in Economics and Finance.

You may change your intended exit point at any time during the program.

    Semester 1 (PgCert) modules include:

    • Research methodologies for Finance and Economics
    • Financial Theory and Practice
    • Economics of Financial Markets

    Semester 2 (PgDip) Modules Include:

    • Money, Interest Rates and Banking
    • Emerging Financial Markets
    • Banking and Financial Institutions
    • Applied Econometrics and Financial Time Series Analysis

    Optional Modules include:

    • Advanced Financial Mathematics
    • Financial Derivatives

    Learning & Teaching

Taught modules will be delivered in a variety of ways, depending on the nature of the material and the skills or preferences of the course tutor. Individual or small scale tutorials, interactive seminars and large scale lectures will all be common, and most programs will also make extensive use of work placements, field trips and site visits, laboratory or workshop sessions and more. You will also do a great deal of independent study and reading.

    Career Possiblities

Brighton University’s MSc, PgDip or PgCert in Economics and Finance prepares you to take on more advanced, responsible and challenging roles within your existing organisation or somewhere entirely new. Of course, many graduates accept lucrative roles in the Finance or Financial Services industries, but many also become Economic Consultants, develop expertise in International Development or accept employment in the public sector. Other students use the course as a route to their PhD or MPhil degrees.

    Entry Credit

Successful completion will result in an MSc degree, a PgDip or a PgCert.

Students must typically have achieved an honours undergraduate degree in a relevant subject to apply. The full list of accepted qualifications can be found here.

All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test. An overall IELTS score of 6.5 with no section scoring less than 5.5 would qualify, for example.
