    Course Summary

    Canterbury Christ Church University’s BEng program focuses on Mechanical Engineering, but it also prepares students from all backgrounds for a future in a wide range of Engineering professions, or to continue on to their Master’s degrees or even PhDs in the field. It is a highly practical, hands-on program, and has been developed with the needs of today’s employers in mind.

    You’ll study ways of designing, developing, maintaining and improving all types of mechanical components and systems. You’ll soon be able to provide the high quality engineering solutions which allow the manufacturing, power generation and distribution, and other industries need to overcome challenges and take full advantage of opportunities.

    This program includes an integrated foundation year. This is important in that it allows students who do not meet the traditional requirements for a 3 year BEng degree program – especially those of Maths and Science A Levels – to not only enter into the program but excel in it.

    Course Outline

    This degree program is typically delivered over 4 years at full time, or over up to 8 years at part time.

    Foundation Year

    This will be a catch-up year where you’ll either develop or reinforce your understanding of the disciplines which underpin a Mechanical Engineering education. These include:

    • Applied engineering
    • Digital and analogue electronics
    • Mathematics
    • Physics

    Main Program:

    Over the remaining three years of the degree program you’ll take a core curriculum designed to give you a broad competence in mechanical engineering and an understanding of the role the engineer plays in many modern industries. These core modules include:

    • Applied science
    • Building services
    • Design for computer aided manufacture
    • Heat and fluid transfer (Thermofluids)
    • Industry 4.0 (advanced manufacturing)
    • Materials engineering
    • Mathematics
    • Mechanical structural dynamics
    • Systems engineering and integration

    These modules have been selected to emphasise core themes such as:

    • Employability
    • Health and safety
    • Legal, ethical, and environmental regulations
    • Policy and practice
    • Professional practice and career development
    • Quality and control
    • The engineer’s role in society

    Learning & Teaching

    Taught modules will be delivered in a variety of ways, depending on the nature of the material and the skills or preferences of the course tutor.

    Foundation year modules will typically each include around 20 hours of lecture time, 40 hours of work in the laboratory and around 10 hours of tutorial sessions, as well as independent reading and study.

    The remaining 3 years of modules will usually each require roughly 24 hours of lecture time and a further 24 hours divided between tutorials, skills workshops and laboratory time each.

    Career Possiblities

    You’ll have a very broad range of choices for your career after graduating. Many students do go directly into industry of course, such as improving vehicle aerodynamics, automotive engine efficiency, improving the performance of automotive or aerospace vehicle frames, or creating the next generation of fast, efficient manufacturing machinery. Others go into the legal sector to review patents, into the financial sector as consultants and business analysts. Others stay in academia for a time.

    Entry Credit

    Successful completion will result in a 4 year BEng degree.

    Applicants must typically have earned at least 32 UCAS Tariff points to enter the foundation year, but other qualifications are also accepted. The full list of accepted qualifications can be found here.

    All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test. A good IELTS score would qualify, for example.
